Issue One Hundred Twenty Nine – Authors Publish Magazine https://authorspublish.com We help authors get their words into the world. Tue, 16 May 2017 16:34:55 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.1 The Gravity of the Thing: Submission Guidelines https://authorspublish.com/the-gravity-of-the-thing-submission-guidelines/ Thu, 22 Oct 2015 16:25:14 +0000 http://www.authorspublish.com/?p=5036 The Gravity of the Thing is an online literary magazine devoted to publishing original fiction, narrative nonfiction, and poetry. Their journal aims to present everyday objects in uncommon ways, to defamiliarize the reader with the ordinary, making it new and strange. They want their readers to be taken on a journey, to experience transformation that brings them someplace new. They like work that is aware of its form and uses structure to express its personality. Playing with possibilities of craft, each issue includes a selection of six word stories. You can read these micro narratives online, along with flash fiction and nonfiction, and featured poetry and prose.

The Gravity of the Thing is published quarterly. They publish both new and established writers, and like to champion voices that are sometimes quieted in the literary exchange, such as women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQIA communities. They are accepting submission till February 29th.

Fiction and nonfiction writers may submit any number of six word stories, stories that contain exactly six words, but only one may be published. Fiction and nonfiction writers may also submit one piece of flash writing, 500 words or fewer, or one short story, 3000 words or fewer. The Gravity of the Thing also accepts longer works of fiction and nonfiction as featured writing. These submissions may be 3000 to 5000 words. Excerpts from longer pieces should be self-contained. Poets may submit up to five poems.

The Gravity of the Thing accepts submissions online, but not via post or email. They accept simultaneous submissions, but do not accept previously published work.

Self E Library Journal: Pros and Cons for the Aspiring Writer https://authorspublish.com/self-e-library-journal-pros-and-cons-for-the-aspiring-writer/ Thu, 22 Oct 2015 16:23:37 +0000 http://www.authorspublish.com/?p=4899 Independent authors can always benefit from new opportunities to showcase their work.  A new website, Self-E Library Journal, provides an exciting opportunity for writers to build a fan base and market themselves through a reputable venue.

WHAT:  Self-E Library Journal provides a platform for independent authors to make their works available to library patrons.  This feature only materialized this year in 2015, and many states need submissions from independent authors.

WHERE:  Individual states elect to subscribe to this component.  From there, the system is made available at different tiers either through the state (the Arizona State Library); through counties (San Diego County Library in California); or through specific libraries (Queens Public Library in New York).  If your state has not yet subscribed to Library Journal Self E, you are still able to submit your work.  There will soon be an international Indie component.

WHY:  Aspiring writers can expect to see three distinct benefits come from having their work included in their state’s Indie Anthology.  First and most obvious, it provides a new audience for the independent author.  Second, social media changed the mechanics of the writing industry.  Being able to cite published work which has passed the scrutiny of a panel and been approved by a public library system definitely gives the independent author prestige points.  Third, that small boost in distinction and publicity can greatly encourage the aspiring writer to set more goals and finish projects.  In other words, it inspires independent authors to keep writing!

WHY NOT:  Library Journal Self E retains perpetual, non-restricted, worldwide rights to your submission.  Put simply, they will always have the ability to distribute, market, and reproduce your work electronically through any public library system.  The author does retain intellectual and propriety rights.

HOW:  Having your writing featured in Library Journal Self E system may not prove as beneficial to established independent authors who have published major work, particularly writing which shows potential to develop into even larger ventures, like documentaries, screen plays, or series.  However, this avenue can certainly benefit a writer who has only published one or two small projects and anticipates building a freelance career by providing two significant fan bases: 1) readers who download your book, and 2) the panel members who take the time to judge whether your work meets their criteria.  Take advantage of this free opportunity to have your work showcased in a notable public domain by visiting their submission page:

Good Luck to All!

Crimson Romance: Now Accepting to Book Submissions https://authorspublish.com/crimson-romance/ https://authorspublish.com/crimson-romance/#comments Mon, 05 Oct 2015 21:20:51 +0000 http://www.authorspublish.com/?p=4278 Updated May 2017

Crimson Romance is a former imprint of Adams Media, that was bought by Simon & Schuster, this year. They remain open to unsolicited submissions.

Crimson Romance is a digital-first romance line that is open to submissions in five popular subgenres: romantic suspense, contemporary, paranormal, historical, and spicy romance. They recently started accepting LGBTQIA+ adult romances that feature a strong emotional/romantic journey between two partners. Romances where both partners are male are particularly encouraged.

They are looking for previously unpublished full-length novels (between 55,000 – 90,000 words) as well as novellas (between 20,000 – 50,000 words). All authors are encouraged to to submit any works that have not been previously published in whole or in part in any media, that includes self publishing.

Crimson Romances primarily focus on the hero and heroine’s emotional journey together towards love. They only accept works that end happily ever after or happy for now. They are not interested in any other genre of books. However, they do claim to want romances that are a little offbeat, and that twist established themes.

Make it clear in your query letter what makes your romance different. They are looking for authors that have a strong online presence and are willing to promote their work online.

All submissions must be made online through email. If you have a completed novel make sure to submit the manuscript along with a query letter and a detailed (3-5 page) synopsis. Your query letter should include the goals, motivations, and conflict for your characters.

For specific submission calls, to learn more, or to submit, please visit their page here
