While they showcase well-known contributors from across the nation, they also devote pages to local and emerging writers. They publish many styles of writing—literary, experimental, personal, humorous, critical, and the like—on many topics—nature, politics, religion, science, culture, war, history, folklore, personal memory, and much more. They simply wish to please readers by publishing the best writing they can find. In addition to their print publication, as a special online feature, they also offer videos of Southern Indian Review contributors reading their work. You can get a sense of what they publish by browsing their video archives online.

Southern Indiana Review is published in May and October, and each issue contains work from around 25 authors. They accept submissions from September 1 through April 30. Contributing authors are paid $50.

Poets may submit up to five poems. Fiction writers may submit short stories, film scripts, or short novel excerpts, 1,000 to 7,500 words. Playwrights may submit ten minute plays or long one-acts. Nonfiction writers may submit essays that are personal, critical, historical, or nostalgic. They may also submit reviews, interviews, profiles, or intellectual discourses. Nonfiction submissions may be any length. All submissions should be accompanied by a cover letter including a brief biography. In addition to these guidelines, each Southern Indiana Review genre editor provides a statement about their editorial taste. You can read these statements by following the links in the submission guidelines online.

Southern Indiana Reviews accepts submissions online and by post, but not via email. All postal submissions are recycled after review, not returned. They accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that authors withdraw work published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.

Ulysses Press: Submission Guidelines https://authorspublish.com/ulyssespress/ Thu, 03 Dec 2015 01:02:22 +0000 http://www.authorspublish.com/?p=5069 Updated February 10th, 2026: They are now part of the Stable Book Group. They also are no longer open to submissions but seem to be trying to recruit freelancers for projects via social media.

Ulysses Press is an independent publisher that has been around for almost a decade. They focus on publishing non-fiction books aimed at niche markets.  It is a good idea to go through their catalog before submitting to see if your work is a good fit for their press.

They are looking for books on the forefront of emerging trends, books that have a unique angle on an established topic, or books that fill a demonstrated niche in the trade book market. They publish a variety of books aimed at children and teens. Occasionally they publish fiction for adults.

Submissions must be made by post. Submitters should expect to wait at least three months before hearing a response. Make sure you include self-addressed stamped envelope and your email addresses. Acceptances, rejections, and other correspondence may be conducted via e-mail. Inclusion of a working e-mail address may dramatically reduce response times.

Please submit a brief synopsis of the project that is no more than 2 pages in length. Include an annotated table of contents, 1-2 sample chapters, and an author biography. Also include your market research that contains a description of the target audience, and a brief comparison of competitive titles.

10 New and Exciting Journals https://authorspublish.com/10-new-and-exciting-journals/ https://authorspublish.com/10-new-and-exciting-journals/#comments Tue, 13 Oct 2015 00:10:50 +0000 http://www.authorspublish.com/?p=5003 In the last 6 months the following journals opened their metaphorical doors for the first time. It is great to submit to new journals as the editors tend to have more energy and enthusiasm. They also tend to be more open to new authors or authors with only a small list of past publications. Of course new journals don’t yet have a reputation, one way or the other, so there is some risk attached to it. However, in my experience the risk is worth it because the reward can be great.

Not all of these journals are currently open to submissions, but the majority are.
