Issue One Hundred Thirty Five – Authors Publish Magazine https://authorspublish.com We help authors get their words into the world. Established in 1967, this long-running journal is among Canada’s most essential reads. The Malahat Review publishes all styles of writing—they simply seek to promote excellent literature.  They aim to support emerging writers, especially those from Canada, by publishing budding new voices alongside established authors. They also hope to raise interest in Canadian writing by publishing critical commentary. You can get a sense of what they publish by reading their newsletter, Malahat lite, or by reading reviews and interviews online.

The Malahat Review is published in print, and each of the four annual issues contains work from about 25 authors.  They accept submissions year-round, and submitting writers can expect a response within about one to two months. The Malahat Review aims to publish the most current literature, so they rarely delay publication of accepted work by more than one issue.

Poets may submit three to five poems, or up to six pages of poetry. The Malahat Review often publishes two or more poems by the same author, so poets should submit more than one poem. Fiction writers may submit one short story, up to 8,000 words. If the stories are shorter than 1,000 words, fiction writers may submit more than one story. Nonfiction writers may submit one piece of creative nonfiction—personal essay, memoir, narrative nonfiction, travel writing, historical account, biography, social commentary, and such—up to 4,500 words. If the works are shorter than 1,000 words, nonfiction writers may submit more than one piece. Writers in all genres may also submit translations accompanied by the original text and a letter of permission from the original author. Writers submitting translations should follow the genre guidelines listed above. Writers may query via email about submitting reviews of Canadian-authored books, interviews, or other forms of criticism.

Authors may also submit publishing tips addressed to writers for Malahat’s bimonthly online column.  Articles about publishing, 750 words or fewer, can be submitted via email. The Malahat Review pays $50 for articles published in the column.

The Malahat Review accepts submissions online, but not via post or email. They accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that writers withdraw work published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work.

Litro

Litro is a London based free print magazine for commuters. They are searching for submissions on the theme of love. This is what they have to say about the theme:  “It’s the most precious and often the most elusive thing and yet it’s a word we use so lightly. “I love those shoes.” “I love your hair.” The rapper KRS-One said: “That word love is very very serious. Very addictive.” Love. You can be in it or out of it. Maybe you even feel you can’t live without it. You might feel it for yourself, your friends, your cat, your apartment, your partner. For Litro #149: Love, we’d love to read your stories about the L-word. What is love? When do you feel love, and how?”. They publish flash fiction, short stories, and nonfiction. They are not interested in poetry. Submissions are due by December 15th. To learn more visit their website here.

Parabola
Parabola is a respected magazine that publishes nonfiction and poetry. They also publish some short fiction. They pay their writers. They are currently looking for submissions that relate to the theme of Innocence and Experience. All material related to this theme must be submitted by March 1st. Loose ID: Romance Book Publisher Seeking Submissions https://authorspublish.com/loose-id-romance-book-publisher-seeking-submissions/ Tue, 27 Oct 2015 22:21:51 +0000 http://www.authorspublish.com/?p=5071 Last Updated December 2017: Unfortunately Loose ID will close their doors next year. You can read more about this here.

Loose ID is a romance publisher that publishes a large number of electronic books every year. They are open to reprints and works by brand new authors. They have four lines, Love Unleashed (hot romance),  On the Edge (taboo romance), Young Hearts (new adult romance), and Love Revisited (republished romance).

Authors have had a mixed experience with them. Many have published multiple books with them and have good things to say. Although these authors stress that the promotion is up to you.

Authors do praise the amount of editorial feedback and proofreading your novel receives before publication.

Other authors have had a more mixed experience. There is a very active thread discussing Loose ID over at Absolute Writes which is worth reading here before submitting. Authors do seem to agree on the fact that Loose ID primarily publishes books with a “high heat” level, in other words, a lot of sex.

For regular submissions, please submit your complete manuscript and a synopsis of the whole plot. In the body of the email include your name, pen name, contact email, and any previous publishing history, actual word count, genre, and a brief description of your story.

To submit to their reprints line submit the full manuscript along with proof that the rights have reverted to you and include your name, pen name, and contact email in the body of the email. Include the publication history of the story as well as reviews (if relevant), as well as the name, word count, genre, and a brief description of your story.
