Issue One Hundred Forty Seven – Authors Publish Magazine https://authorspublish.com We help authors get their words into the world. Tue, 21 Apr 2020 12:53:56 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.1 Farrar, Straus and Giroux: Open to Submissions https://authorspublish.com/farrar-straus-and-giroux-open-to-submissions/ Thu, 16 Jan 2020 15:34:37 +0000 https://www.authorspublish.com/?p=13091 Updated on April 21st, 2020 – They have closed to unsolicited submissions. We will update if this changes at any point, but I don’t think this is a temporary change.

Farrar, Straus and Giroux (FSG) is open to direct submissions. They are an imprint of Macmillan, one of the Big Five publishers.

They focus on publishing quality poetry, literary fiction, and history for adults, as well as books for children. They are open to direct submissions in all categories except children’s books.

I have read a lot of books published by FSG and they always publish quality literary work. Over the years, their authors have won numerous National Book Awards, Pulitzer Prizes, and twenty-two Nobel Prizes in literature.

They don’t publish anything that isn’t very literary, and it is rare that they will publish a debut book, but there are exceptions. If you want to get a better feel for what they are currently publishing you can visit their Coming Soon page here.

They do not publish any subgenres outside of literary fiction. So please do not submit this work.

They only accept mailed submissions. When you submit to them, include a cover letter describing your submission along with the first 50 pages of the manuscript. If you are submitting poems, they ask that you only submit 3-4 poems.

All authors must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. They also do return manuscripts if you include the appropriately sized stamped envelope, which is a little unusual.

They try to reply to all submissions with three to five months.

1001 Journal: Now Accepting Submissions https://authorspublish.com/1001-journal-now-accepting-submissions/ Sat, 27 Feb 2016 01:02:06 +0000 http://www.authorspublish.com/?p=5529 1001 Journal is an annual print project produced by the students in the Certificate Program at the Independent Publishing Resource Center in Portland, Oregon. This handsomely designed, handmade journal houses poetry, prose, and comics. At 1001 Journal, they are especially interested in work that employs both words and images and hybrid work that breaks the boundaries of genre. You can get an idea of their style by exploring their blog or listening to their podcast, The Staple, here: https://soundcloud.com/thestaple.

Right now, 1001 Journal is accepting submissions for their upcoming issue through Tuesday, March 15, 2016. Poets may submit three to five poems. Fiction writers may submit up to three pieces of flash fiction, 15 to 400 words; one piece of flash fiction, 400 to 1,000 words; or one short story, 1,000 to 4,000 words. 1001 Journal does not accept genre fiction, excerpts from longer works, interviews, or book reviews. They do, however, welcome pieces that cannot be defined by genre conventions. Pieces of this nature may be submitted under whatever genre best suits the work, and may be explained in an accompanying cover letter.

Comic artists or authors submitting work that employs both image and text may submit one to six pages of color or black and white work formatted to fit an 8.5 x 5.5” page.

1001 Journal accepts submissions via email, but not online or by post. They accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that authors immediately inform the editors via email if a submitted piece is published elsewhere. They do not accept previously published work, including personal blog entries.

If you would like to learn more or submit to 1001 Journal, please visit their website at http://www.iprc.org/education/certificate-program/1001-journal/.

Red Moon Romance: Manuscript Submission Guidelines https://authorspublish.com/red-moon-romance-manuscript-submission-guidelines/ Wed, 10 Feb 2016 01:11:54 +0000 http://www.authorspublish.com/?p=5425 A boutique publisher, Red Moon, usually publishes about 16 to 20 new titles per year. They are an imprint of World Weaver Press but explicitly state on their website that they are not owned by any major corporations.

Their main aim is to bridge the gap between self publishing and traditional publishing. With that in mind, authors should understand that Red Moon does not intend to dominate the commercial market.

Their main focus is on stories portraying the essence of romance: the fun and joy of courtship, butterflies in the tummy, knees going weak, etc. However they are not opposed to Hot romances.

Their open submission period is from January 1 until October 31.

Four editors are listed on their website. The website as a whole does not have a friendly interface — you really have to search for what you are looking for. However, the website is updated on a regular basis. Their latest releases are tagged “out now” so it’s pretty easy for readers to find — which is good news for authors. They seem committed to promoting their authors and offer readers the option of signing up for their newsletter to keep up to date with newest releases. Open submissions are also listed on the landing page. Red Moon is also active on Facebook and Twitter and encourages readers to tweet their reviews / reading experiences.

They have a blog which was last updated on the 7th of January with their latest open call for submissions. They also feature their authors on their blog — which is a good thing for readers browsing through the site looking for more information on the publisher. Bloggers are welcome to join their press and publicity team by signing up on their website for cover reveals. All in all Red Moon Romance comes across as a legit publisher who has the best interests of their authors at heart.

Red Moon Romance publishes digital and print editions of speculative fiction at various lengths (novels, novellas, serials, collections, and themed anthologies) for Adult and New Adult audiences. Their distribution is primarily online: they sell through websites (including their own since summer 2015). They occasionally sell at bookstores, and always in the vendor room of conventions they attend.

Authors should take note of the length of submissions:

  • Novels 50,000-100,000 words.
  • Novellas over 20,000 words.
  • Serialized fiction length varies depending on the project. Single-author collections with a total word length of 30,000 words or more.

They also consider the following sub-genres:

  • Contemporary/ChickLit
  • Fairy tale-based
  • Fantasy/Urban fantasy
  • Historical
  • Kink/BDSM
  • Mythology-based
  • Paranormal
  • Science fiction
  • Shape-shifter
  • Steampunk
  • Thriller/Suspense
  • Time travel
  • Vampire
  • Urban
  • Western/Cowboy

They do not publish young adult chaste romances.

Their payment is a pro-rata share of 40% net profit on anthology sales distributed among the contributing authors based on story word-count paid semi-annually. Plus a trade paperback copy of the anthology. No advances are paid.
